Man

"There is strength in stillness." - Jun

a-photograph-of-a-5ft-tall-androgynous-f_o9vsMLAKQOKUW-OS0CL7qA_MNrKKr38St2PrEiAHlORSg.png

Background

I approached this piece by handcrafting each geometric plane of the figure’s face and body, then layering hundreds of individually shaped red tiles to form the robe. The process was a meditation on patience and presence, allowing the act of building each element to mirror the calm, grounded state the figure embodies.

Process

I began by carving the figure’s body from solid wood, shaping the planes of the face and torso to create a balance between realism and abstraction. Once the form was complete, I hand-shaped and kiln-fired hundreds of small clay tiles, each one slightly varied in size and texture. These tiles were then meticulously attached, layer by layer.

The Self

To me, this piece is about resilience through stillness—a reminder that strength can be found in moments of deep calm and self-possession. The wooden body symbolizes the enduring core of who we are, while the clay robe represents the layers of experience and challenge that shape and protect us
