"Confidence can lie in the lines on our bodies." - Lea

Background
I created this piece by carving the figure from wood in a way that allowed the natural grain to guide the flowing lines across the body, almost like a living map. The process was about merging the warmth of organic material with the softness of fabric, letting each element enhance the other’s presence.
Process
I started by shaping the figure from a solid block of wood, letting the natural grain dictate the direction and rhythm of the flowing lines. Once the carving was complete, I enhanced these lines with precise inlay work to emphasize the body’s contours and movement. Finally, I draped the figure in a handwoven red wool fabric made by my mother.
The Self
To me, this piece is a tribute to the confidence, strength and complexity I see in women. The flowing lines and the robe made by my mother symbolize how our identities are shaped by both our own resilience and the legacies of the women who came before us.
